Copies are sent out to clubs at one per five members and should be available from your club secretary.

4. PAGB Awards Adjudications

The following note has been received from Leo Rich their Distinction Secretary: -

Following my recent note I can confirm that the Distinctions category for April 2008 is now full.

I will start a short "reserve" list - just in case anyone pulls out - and any others received will automatically be included on the November list (to be held in NCPF) unless the entrant requests otherwise.

The Credit and Master categories are held on the same day. There are about six "Credit" places - which equates to three "Master" spaces - available at the time of writing. We could do with at least one more Master print entrant to make this section more viable.

The single entrant in the Master Slides will be told this section will not run. If you know of any Distinction Slide workers who are thinking about doing the Masters please urge them to put in an entry quickly so that we can run a section at the November 2008 event otherwise, as previously cautioned, it looks as if this will finish due to lack of interest.

Many thanks

So for those of you out there thinking about doing it you can see that you need to plan ahead – good luck!

6. UPP United Photographic Postfolios – another way to share your images

Have you access to the internet? Spend a few minutes checking out www.upp.gb.com . This is the website of United Photographic Postfolios of Great Britain. No handy web access, - you can ask for an information pack by post.

‘UPP’ has now existed for more than 75 years, but moves with the times, and is continually developing to reflect members interests. There are ‘circles’ each of about 15 members, who comment on pictures sent in monthly ‘folios’, add a picture, and send it on, sometimes by hand, mostly by post. There are circles who specialise in prints, slides, electronic imaging, and natural history, while the latest development is for audio visual work. Members of each circle decide how they would like their ‘AGM Panel’ to be chosen. This is a set of 12 pictures to represent the circle in an exhibition each September, which has been viewed by independent judges who select the trophy and certificate winners. For many, UPP is an excellent addition to their hobby, while it is a real bonus for people in rural areas who are unable to attend a local photographic society. Advanced photographers and people just beginning an interest in photography are equally welcome, and more information can be obtained from the membership secretary Liz Boud by ringing 01825 74 06 98

11. And Finally – The PIXELS REPORT – Thanks Leigh!

For the second consecutive year an audience in excess of 100 people attended Pixels at Talbot Green Community Centre on Saturday 3rd November. Chairperson of Gwynfa and MC for the day, Philippa Wood, opened proceedings by 'calling the roll' to discover that representatives of 21 out of the 25 clubs entering were present, a very pleasing statistic indeed considering that some had come from as far afield as Dean, Crai and Tenby!

Philippa's 'audience participation' approach was continued by judge Peter Gennard MFIAP EFIAP/p of Stourbridge who invited us to cheer each time he used the word 'lovely' (and then proceeded to test us throughout the day). As well as this fun approach, Peter did a thoroughly excellent job of working his way through 100 photographs with succinct and constructive comments. His positive mindset and ready wit were enjoyed by all present. Lovely! (Hurray).

The closeness of the competition was illustrated by the fact that all 25 clubs finished within 9 points of one another and at the end of proceedings, Peter had to chose between three tied photos in both the colour and monochrome sections and three tied clubs overall. It was a nail biting finish and the calling of the raffle before the final results were announced added to the tension.

In the Colour section, the three photographs in contention were 'Approaching Storm' by David A'herne of Caerphilly, 'Clocking Off' by Tony Collis of Llanelli and 'Grey Wagtail' by Allan Clarke ARPS of Newport all scored 19 points. Peter eventually decided that 'Best Colour Photograph' in Pixels 07 was 'Clocking Off' by Tony Collis of Llanelli.

Again in the Monochrome section, three photos were in contention, each scoring 18 points. They were: 'Louise' by Alun Kibble of Western Valley, 'At The Beach' by Sue Emery of Rhondda and 'Ode To Brandt' by Brian Gaylor of Swansea. Peter's final choice as 'Best Monochrome Photograph' in Pixels 07 was 'Louise' by Alun Kibble of Western Valley.

Overall, a close fought affair saw three clubs tied on 68 points. The 'countback' rule used in Pixels meant that Swansea were the winners (having 2 'eighteens', a 'seventeen' and a 'fifteen'), 2006 winners Rhondda were second (with one 'eighteen', two 'seventeens' and a 'sixteen') and hosts Gwynfa were third (with four 'seventeens'). 2005 winners Western Valley were fourth on 67 points with a further five clubs on 65 (Aberkenfig, Port Talbot, Ebbw Vale, Newport and Bridgend & District).

Pixels 07 co-ordinator, Leigh Woolford, would like to extend a personal thank you to everyone who contributed towards making the day a great success especially Philippa Wood for her never ending enthusiasm and for 'chairing' proceedings on the day, Alec Stewart for being official photographer, Alan & Val Shepherd for doing an amazing job with the raffle (a new record I think), Alan S, Mostyn Davies and Philippa for donating the extra raffle prizes, Martyn Pinches for providing the PA system, Phil Davies for the loan of the WPF screen and all the lads and lasses from Gwynfa who fetched, carried, served and shifted all day long (Ken, Betty, Meg, Mostyn, Andy, Dave, Alan, Val and Alec to name but a few). Finally, very special thanks must go to our own 'Charlie's Angels' (Sheila, Cath and Linda) who worked hard all day providing us with a truly sumptuous buffet. I'm so glad you got to see some of the competition this year girls! Special thanks to our fantastic committee at Gwynfa without whom the above would simply not have been possible.

Last but most certainly not least, huge thanks to all the clubs who entered and to everyone who attended on the day. Without your support it would not have been such a fun day!

For the record, the Clubs that entered were:
ABERDARE, ABERKENFIG, BARRY, BRIDGEND & DISTRICT, CAERPHILLY, CARDIFF, CARDIGAN, CRAI, DEAN, DWYFOR, EBBW VALE, GWYNFA, LLANELLI, MERTHYR TYDFIL, MORRISTON, NEATH, NEWPORT, PORT TALBOT, PYLE & PORTHCAWL, RHONDDA, SWANSEA, TENBY, THE VALE, WESTERN VALLEY and WREXHAM & DISTRICT.

Regards,

Leigh Woolford
