The instructions below show alternative approaches to creating black and white images.

1) Load the colour image that you are going to convert into Photoshop.

2) Copy the layer (shortcut key is Ctrl-J)

3) Desaturate this new layer (shortcut key is Ctrl-Shift-U)

4) Copy this desaturated layer (shortcut key is Ctrl-J)

5) Now go to the layers options and choose the dropdown menu that shows the blend options.

6) Try selecting different options such as multiply, linear dodge, overlay, etc.

7) The effects can be reduced by changing the opacity setting.
